Basil is one of the most widely used spices in all the world. It is grown in Egypt, France and the United States. It is an excellent seasoning similar to oregano. Basil is good in pizza, spaghetti sauce, and tomato dishes and it add a lovely taste and provide a tantalizing aroma when making soups, stews, egg, rice dishes or mushroom dishes. Add fresh basil leaves during the last ten minutes of cooking for the fullest flavor. Dried herbs can be added at any time during the cooking.
Basil is easy to grow in the garden or in pots. There are many varieties of basil, but this is the one I grow and use for cooking. For more information or to order seeds, see basil on Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds website. The picture above is from their website to make it easier for you to identify.
